Words, Words, Words and More Words

IMG_2978 The Eureka Factory  – The last few hours have been spent pouring over the 70+ contributions we received at the Hive event, and online via Twitter and Instructables.   We considered the buffet of sentences before us, moved them around, read them out loud, and then began to pull them apart, going where words and phrases moved us.

Chuck took the lead unearthing the stories within stories.  Joel stepped in, captivated by IMG_2972particular turns of phrase.  Steve and Chris considered how to  tell the story of creating the stories, and I documented, photographing, and providing narrative.  We each found our roles in this collaborative process, the place where our skills met our interests and could contribute to the larger whole.

It’s been a fascinating process: Meeting and speaking with the dozens of people who came through the arts center during the afternoon, and the very social and interactive process of sharing their words on the wall, then the more focused and insular experience of looking at those words closely, intimately, and then the process of reducing them to some essential element. New sentences and fresh images arose from the old.

IMG_2976 William Boroughs cut up books and articles, rearranging organized thought into something that appeared random but that he believed had prescient meaning.  We’ve started with random thoughts, the words of more than 60 different individuals, and some form of organization has emerged – poetry, the seeds of engaging fiction,  fortune cookie fortunes and some potentially solid life advice.

Now we turn to the challenge of sharing the story of these stories with others, finding a wayIMG_2986 to illustrate the journey of all these good people’s words into a literary clay from which we’ve sculpted new turns of phrase that become fresh sentences with new meanings.

The Story Unfolds: Crowdsourcing Sentences

posted by: on

The Eureka Factory  – The premise of our Literary Hack is simply this:  Can we find narrative meaning from the isolated random musings of strangers?

Or, in a nutshell:

We will deconstruct language.

Will we deconstruct language?

Deconstruct language we will!

So we spent this fantastic day at the Hive Community Innovation Center grand opening, at the John F. Germany Library. Over 200 people came through the facility, checking out robots, 3D printers, the recording studio, the hands-on workshop, the Media:scape and the arts center, where we were camped out for the Deconstruction.  There, we asked people to share a thought, a single sentence.  It could play off a sentence someone wrote before them, or just stand alone.

The arts center features this wonderful white board wall that became an expressive canvass for people to share their sentences for our project. They started out hesitantly – a big white wall can be intimidating.  Where to start? What to say?  Not surprisingly, after the first few sentences went up, the board began to fill – with sayings, quotes, random imagery, snippets of poetry.  People would stand in front of the white board wall, reading all the words that came before, and then pick up a marker and add their own.

Now, we divinate, cast the bones of sentences and see what tales they tell!

Is it already past the halfway mark??  So we just talked to the hosts about our projects and just to clarify, last year we did the Zombie Apocalypse and this year we are doing “Light it up!”  = lots of lights, lots of LEDs.

People are starting to trickle back in, even with the snow that we’ve been getting all morning!

4) The screwdriver has been hacked to fit to the laser printer and we’re currently adjusting the speed.  And bacon’s been put in already – 2 passes = nearly cooked bacon!

Bozo has been hard at work making beats and other instrumentals that will soon be filled with the deconstructed poetry of Charles Bukowski.

Potential album cover?

We also have some people collecting samples from around Los Angeles (Bukowski’s stomping ground) that we will also incorporate into the music, glitched and deconstructed of course. We also have some people set up with some drinks and Bukowski quotes that they will be reading into their phones once the drinks are gone.

Here’s a taste of what we’ve been up to so far:

Tonight it is finishing up some instrumentals, adding Bukowski and glitching the hell out of everything.

4) For our uber project, we may have toasted the power supply, so we’re going to hack a nonfunctional screwdriver to it to see if that’ll work for our purposes.
