The Deconstruction is a 48-hour collaborative competition for makers, artists, students, performers, problem solvers, trouble makers, robots, and poets…basically anyone!  It challenges participants to rethink (deconstruct) the world around them and create something completely new from existing objects and ideas.

The goal of the Deconstruction is to bring people around the world together to create, collaborate, experiment, and inspire.

The Deconstruction is pleased to announce the winners from its second annual global event.

More than 25 teams from around the world competed in The Deconstruction, including teams from the US, Africa, Spain, Lithuania and China who created cars, deconstructed the written word, helped community members in need and much more.

And without further ado..the 2014 Award Winners

THE DECONSTRUCTION AWARD:
The Deconstruction Award, presented to the team whose final creation best embodies the spirit of the event, is awarded to North Springs Laser Sharks (NSLS)of Sandy Springs, Ga. NSLS is a team of High School students from the North Springs Charter High School Science and Art Magnet program. Their final project, which resembles a large-scale Etch A Sketch art machine, rethinks the ideas of art, mechanics and human interaction.

Judging was based on a combination of concept, re-use of old objects and ideas, as well as documentation that demonstrated their process. The team wins the grand prize – The Pegasus Touch 3D Laser Printer from FSL3D.  Congratulations Laser Sharks!!

THE DECONSTRUCTION BEST VIDEO AWARD:
The Best Video Award winner goes to the team who creates not only an exceptional project but is also able to capture the project and experience in a compelling video. The Ant Farm from Highland Park, Calif. takes this award for their Deconstruction of textiles by creating fabric into food.  Awesome project.  Awesome video!

THE DECONSTRUCTION PROBLEM SOLVING AWARD:
The Problem Solving Award is presented to the team who best isolates and tackles a real world problem. The Imagination Nation  wins this category for their post-Katrina “ARTchitecture” initiative, which involves rebuilding homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina, with a unique artistic and aesthetic twist.

THE DECONSTRUCTION THANKS AND CONGRATULATES ALL THE 2014 PARTICIPANTS!   TOGETHER YOU ALL MADE THE WORLD A LITTLE MORE AWESOMER-ER!

ai-Sept26-Fox-chaos-textSo while putting together a talk on “The Life Creative”, I came across the works of Episcopal priest and “radical theologian” Matthew Fox- radical, apparently, for his belief in “original blessing” and in the human calling to be creative.  His quote at above, from his book, Creativity, seems to aptly sum up our experience of the Deconstruction: Accepting the challenge to convert chaos into some kind of order- and finding, in the process, something beautiful, something sustainable and something that remains.
