Welcome to the Deconstruction.
Unless you’ve participated before. then welcome back :)

HOW TO DO DECONSTRUCTION

*REGISTRATION FOR DECONSTRUCTION 2020 IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED*

The Deconstruction is a creative collaboration event held online - and in real life. Before the event, a topic is released for our participants (you!) to explore (deconstruct!). Then, during a 48-hour window you re-imagine the topic and create something completely new with resources you already have.

You’re bringing something into the world that did not exist before! It can be a work of art, a performance, an invention. It can be fun, it can be serious, it can be both!

Sounds great. How do I participate?

Step 1.

Register by Wednesday, April 29. It’s FREE! Assemble a group of friends, family, collaborators, or conspirators. (Solo participants welcome, too!) Let us know if you are interested in teaming up with someone you don’t know… there is a question on the registration form; and we can help coordinate.

Please note - this year The Deconstruction will take place entirely online. If you are not living with or currently sheltering in place with your teammate(s), your team collaboration must happen online.

This year’s event features 3 participation categories. If you qualify for multiple categories, just select the one you prefer. It’s fine.

  • Family (parents or guardians participating with kids under 16)

  • Student (students enrolled in middle school or high school)

  • Everyone (umm, everyone)

You can start organizing your team members, thinking about your project, and assessing materials on-hand (but please, no making anything until the actual event begins).

Step 2.

Step 3.

On Friday, May 1st at 4PM PDT (UTC-7) / 7PM EDT (UTC-4) The Deconstruction goes LIVE!!! We will introduce the theme, check in with teams, and start the 48-hour clock. Tune in to this website.

Step. 4

The most important step: Collaborate and create with your team. Document your process. Enjoy what others create via the livestream. HAVE FUN!

Step 5.

On Sunday, May 3rd it is Show-and-Tell Day and the Deconstruction streams its finale! Show the world what you did and how you did it!

Step 6.

After the event, please make and submit a final (short) video of the project you made. This video is to celebrate and archive what you did, and most importantly, how you did it. It is also an important part of the award process.

F.A.Q.

Is this event for me?  Who can participate in The Deconstruction?

YOU! The event is open to anyone and everyone of all ages and backgrounds. Anyone, anywhere, can participate in the Deconstruction. You can do it… we believe in you.

What’s the time commitment? Do I have to participate for the full 48 hours?

No, please spend as much time as you can. We’d love to have you involved.

Do I have to physically make an object?  Could I create a short film, a performance, a game, or an app?

ANYTHING GOES!  The only criteria is that you create *something* that did not exist before the event, and that you can demonstrate it. Bring it on. In the past we have had propellor powered cars, Deconstructed musical albums, live performances, international dinner parties, just about everything.

How serious should I take this? What’s on the line?

It’s as serious as you want it to be. This event is about jumpstarting innovation, bringing people together, and having fun. However, we are crowning winners in several categories, and there are some great prizes (because everything is better with prizes).

Who owns what I make?  Do I have to sign away any IP rights?

You own everything you make - all copyrights, all intellectual property past, present, future, and in parallel universes… everything.  The only thing we ask for is the ability to display and talk about it.  We make no claims to what you create.

Can we physically get together to work on our projects?

No, unless you already live with your team. This year’s event is all about Deconstruction of Distance; we are encouraging participants to re-imagine how they collaborate with others while not being in the same physical space. Please continue to adhere to your local and national guidelines with respect to Covid-19 protocols and social distancing.

What are the rules?

  1. This is an event about exploring the concepts of remix, invention, and re-invention. Use as many ideas and existing resources as possible.

  2. Document your process. Each team can post updates, live feeds, and see what other teams are up to. Seeing HOW you create what you create also helps us with the awards process.

  3. Your final entry has to actually be made during the 48-hour competition.

  4. Submit a final video.

  5. Be safe. Be responsible. Be respectful.

Who’s behind this event?  Is this some sort of secret government ploy?

The Deconstruction is an independent “game for change.”  It is a not-for-profit event with no ulterior motives other than providing a platform where people can connect with each other and share ideas in a positive way.

We believe that great ideas are not manifested through unlimited means and resources… They are pieced together using found materials, inspired collaborations, and rethinking what’s right in front of you. We are producing this event because it’s a concept we deeply believe in.

The Deconstruction is a labor of love created and produced by New Creatures. For more information on the project please email us here.

AWARDS!

The Deconstruction is an un-competition. Think of it more as a game everyone can play, that comes with prizes! We’ll be announcing them shortly.

Also (and most importantly) this year’s Deconstruction awards feature a cash donation made to a Covid-19 relief organization which your team helps select.

This year’s event will feature the following awards:

  • STUDENT PROJECT AWARD - An award for middle school or high school teams, the equivalent of an A++ in Deconstruction.

  • FAMILY PROJECT AWARD - For creative families near and far (we CAN teach your grandma how to use Zoom).

  • THE DECONSTRUCTION AWARD -  This is an award completely decided by the actual event participants.

  • MEGA GROUP PROJECT AWARD - Can you mobilize an impressive amount people to work together on a project? If so, you deserve an award. This is your award!

More to be announced on awards and prizes very, very soon. Stay tuned!
